The Magic Doesn’t Fade: What My Second Daughter’s First Year Taught Me
by Sarah Gabel Seifert
A year ago, our family changed again.
We welcomed our second daughter, Adeline, into the world, and somehow, I find myself sitting here celebrating her first birthday wondering how an entire year could have possibly passed so quickly.
I remember before having a second baby, hearing people say, “Soak it all in. It goes so fast.”
Honestly, I used to get a little annoyed by that phrase.
Of course it goes fast, I thought. Everyone knows that.
But now, as a second-time mom, I understand it in a completely different way.
It really does go fast. And somehow, the second time around, it feels even faster.
Maybe that’s why this first birthday feels like such a meaningful opportunity to pause—to look back, to soak it in, and to remember just how much beauty there is in the first year of a little life.
The Magic Doesn’t Fade
One of the things I wondered before having another baby was whether the milestones would feel the same.
Would I be just as amazed when she sat up for the first time?
Would I get just as excited when she started crawling?
Would hearing “Mama” or “Dada” for the first time feel as magical?
The answer has been a resounding yes.
There is something so incredible about watching a tiny human discover the world for the very first time. Whether it’s sitting independently, taking those first steps, trying a new food, laughing at something for the first time, or figuring out how to communicate what they want. None of it becomes less miraculous because you’ve seen it before.
If anything, having a second child gave me a deeper appreciation for just how incredible those little moments are.
I already knew what was coming, but that didn’t make it any less special.
It made me realize just how special it has always been.
Every milestone is still worth celebrating. Every new expression, new sound, new skill, and new little personality trait is still something to stop and marvel at.
The magic doesn’t fade as your family grows.
It multiplies.
The Second Time Around, I Was Able to Breathe a Little More
There’s another gift that came with having a second baby: experience.
The first time around, everything is new.
You’re learning your baby, learning yourself as a mom, learning what every cry might mean, wondering if you’re doing things right, and trying to figure out what matters and what doesn’t.
By the time your second baby comes along, you realize you can breathe a little more.
You know that not every phase lasts forever.
You know that some things you worried about the first time probably didn’t need quite as much worry.
You know that babies develop in their own time.
And you know that eventually, somehow, you will sleep again.
That experience allowed me to be more relaxed in certain ways and, honestly, to enjoy the experience even more.
But perhaps one of the greatest reminders Adeline gave me is that experience doesn’t mean you know exactly what’s coming.
Because every baby is different.
Adeline has her own personality, her own reactions, her own timeline, her own way of experiencing the world. Even as a second-time mom, I have had the privilege of getting to know an entirely new little person.
And that has been so much fun.
She Has Never Known Life Without Her Sister
But perhaps the sweetest part of Adeline’s first year has been watching her relationship with her older sister, Lily Gabel, begin to unfold.
Adeline will never remember a life without her sister .
From the very beginning, she has watched her, laughed at her, loved on her, and admired her.
And she has grown up with a built-in best friend cheering her on.
There is something incredibly special about watching one child experience the milestones of their sibling.
When Adeline learned to crawl, Lily Gabel was there.
When she started laughing, Lily Gabel wanted to make her laugh again.
When she started becoming more expressive and interactive, Lily Gabel was right there, watching and engaging with her.
I found myself experiencing those milestones differently—not just as a mom watching her baby grow, but as a mom watching two sisters grow together.
Their joy became shared joy.
And that has been one of the greatest gifts of this past year.
I Wanted to Remember More This Time
One thing I carried with me into this second experience was a greater awareness of how quickly it all goes.
After having Lily Gabel, I remember wishing I had taken more pictures.
More videos.
More little ordinary moments.
More of the things that seemed insignificant at the time but became so precious in hindsight.
So with Adeline, I tried to be more intentional about capturing them.
Not because I wanted to live behind my phone, but because I wanted to remember.
I wanted videos of her little laugh.
I wanted pictures of the way she looked at her sister.
I wanted to remember the everyday moments that I knew I would someday wish I could return to.
And I also wanted to be more intentional about simply being there.
Because the truth is, you don’t get the first year back.
Not with your first child.
Not with your second.
Not with your third.
Every child gets one first year.
And every first year deserves to be soaked in.
To the Mom Having Her Second, Third, Fourth or Fifth
If you are expecting another baby, or you are somewhere in the middle of another first year, I hope you know this:
It is not any less special because you’ve done it before.
Your heart does not divide when you have another child.
It expands.
The first smile is still magical.
The first laugh is still unforgettable.
The first bite of food is still worth celebrating.
The first crawl, first word, first step, first birthday—they are all still firsts.
They are just the firsts of a different little person.
And there is something incredibly beautiful about getting to know that person.
Having another child has also taught me that there is a unique kind of peace that can come with a growing family.
The attention is no longer centered around one child.
Now there are two.
There are more personalities, more laughter, more chaos, more love—and somehow, more joy than you could have imagined.
And watching your children love one another is a joy all its own.
Soak It In
As I celebrate Adeline’s first birthday, I am reminded that motherhood is full of seasons we think will last forever—and then suddenly realize they have already passed.
The sleepless nights.
The tiny clothes.
The baby giggles.
The crawling.
The messy meals.
The little hands reaching for you.
The sibling laughter from the next room.
All of it.
It is so easy to spend those early years thinking about what comes next. The next milestone. The next phase. The next birthday.
But there is so much beauty in where you are right now.
So, whether this is your first baby or your fifth, my encouragement is simple:
Stop. Soak it in. Take the picture. Take the video. Celebrate the milestone. Watch them discover something new. Let the ordinary moments become memories.
Because it really does go fast.
And if Adeline’s first year has taught me anything, it’s that the magic doesn’t fade as your family grows.
It multiplies.
Happy first birthday, my sweet Adaline.
What a gift it has been to watch you grow, and what an even greater gift it has been to watch your sister love you along the way.
I cannot wait to see what this next year holds for you.
Love,
Mom
